Get up and Go, to help our Active Flag Grow!

Outdoors in October

Walk & Talk

We are delighted that the Active Committee introduced ‘Walk & Talk’. Every morning, we come in and chat to our friends while being active, walking around the yard before school begins. Then when the bell goes we are awake and ready for the day!

Halloween Dress up & Dance

We had great fun on the last day before Mid-term. We weren’t disappointed with the dress-up part as we welcomed lots of witches, monsters, headless men, ghosts & ghouls, all moving to the beat in the school yard. Click above for the video! As for the moves, we never knew devilsh creatures had such rhythm!!

Kickstarting WoW in September

WOW! Another great start to the year as we continue to work towards our second Active Flag. We were thrilled at the enthusiasm shown for the Walk on Wednesdays and delighted with the turn-out, hail rain or shine!

Thanks to the staff for showing the children the safest routes each morning. Well done to all for taking part and we hope you keep up the habit when the weather allows!

June – Active Schools Week

What a fantastic, fun-filled Active Week! Click here for video.
A big thank you to John Morrissey (JM Fitness) for providing an amazing day of Athletics for all the children.
Thanks to School Fitness Ireland who gave the children the opportunity to try Gymnastics, Boxercise, Taekwondo and more.
We had a wonderful sports day with everyone playing rounders, olympic handball, soccer and tag rugby. And we all enjoyed our lovely active walk along the railway and river walk.

May – Onwards – Playground Leaders

For the month of May our active school committee has engaged in the Playground Leaders Initiative. This initiative was carried out every Friday during break time. Different stations were set up around the two yards. The activities included bowling, basketball shooting, skipping, connect four, jenga and so on. Each station was run by a member of the active school committee from the senior classes. Activities changed each week to give the students a chance to engage in different games.

April – Run Around Ireland

For the month of April starting on Monday the 3rd all classes in Killavullen NS committed to the run around Ireland challenge. Run Around Ireland is a ready-made running challenge, designed to promote cross-curricular learning, as well as physical activity. This challenge supports the Athletics strand of the PE programme and gives students the opportunity to develop good running technique. It’s a great way to build physical activity into the school day and to bring learning outdoors. Run Around Ireland part 3 introduces children to new landmarks and locations across the country. Each class completed a run a day around our school yard as part of a whole school initiative.

One lap of the yard = 1km

Each class set targets for destinations to be reached. For example the first and second classes first Target was to reach Pairc Uí Chaoimh. All classes really enjoyed this challenge.

March – Rugby

For the month of March 1st to 6th class participated in one rugby session a week for four weeks.Meabh from Mallow Rugby club came in to do the sessions with the children. The sessions were focused around rugby skill development. The children learned skills such as how to pass the ball correctly. The children also learned about the different rules of the game. It was clear the children enjoyed the sessions as the feedback was very positive from the children at the end of the four weeks.

Feel Good February Spring Walk to the Nano Nagle Centre

Classes recently went on a wonderfully refreshing Spring walk to the Nano Nagle Centre. It was great to make use of such a fantastic local amenity, which we are so lucky to have on our doorstep.

Jump out of January 2023

KNS took part in the Active Flag initiative #FeelGoodFridays: JUMP in to January (27th January), but we decided to call it ‘Jump out of January’ into our month of Fit in Feb. For the ‘Jump out of January’ challenge, ASF encouraged teachers and their classes to bring out the school skipping ropes, and add all their skips together to see which of the mountain peaks of Europe the whole school could reach. Pupils had great fun trying out our brand new stash of skipping ropes, and the Active Flag Committee members were excellent help to all on the day.

WINTER WONDERLAND – December

Winter Wonderland

What fantastic festive fun we had for our Winter Wonderland on the Railway Walk. Tonnes of active stations and all led by our 5th & 6th class. There were even surprises from the Grinch and Christmas stories told on route. Of course, no Winter Wonderland would be complete without some carol singing which there was at every turn led by staff and and their helpers!

‘Festive Fitness Fun’ Dec 2022

On December 13th, we had a Festive day of Fitness Fun. The pupils thoroughly enjoyed the return of School Fitness Ireland back for a day, leading us all in lots of fun festive fitness activities, such as Jingle Bell Gymnastics, Ho Ho Yoga, to name but a few.

Active Every Day Challenge November 2022

To maintain our fitness and continue good work by everyone as we work towards our 2nd Active flag, all classes took part in an Active Break Everyday Challenge, for the month of November. These breaks alternated between an active walk, using our Jam Jar exercises and Fruity Fitness from the Irish Heart Foundation, to name a few. Everyone agreed that these breaks are very beneficial to the pupils, by helping improve concentration and quality of work during the day.

Hallowe’en Dress-up AND DANCE!!

Every pupil took part enthusiastically.

Teachers are looking forward to trying out the many activities linked to the Walkway in the Walkway Ideas Booklet in the coming weeks.

Feel Good February & Seachtain na Gaeilge

Feel Good February was a huge success, with the Run Around Ireland taking us into the beginning of March. The pupils all approached the 4 week running initiative with great enthusiasm, running their hearts out to reach their destination each day, along with completing their PE homework twice weekly.

Well done to all who took part, in what energised us all on the fresh February mornings!!

The month of March allowed us to mark Seachtain na Gaeilge le gníomhaíochtaí freisin. Bhí Obair Bhaile Gníomhach ag gach duine i Seachtain na Gaeilge. Bhí triocha gníomhaíochtaí le déanamh leo féin, le páirtnéir, nó le a dteaghlaigh i rith na  seachtaine. Bhain gach páiste taitneamh as na gníomhaíochtaí.

‘An Dreoilín in Green’ Rinne an scoil ar fad rince mór le chéile don amhrán ‘An Dreoilín’ amuigh sa chlós. Bhí gach páiste agus na múinteoirí gléasta le glas. Bhí glas i nach áit sa chlós and bhí sé go hiontach. Bhain gach duine an-taitneamh as.

Drop Everything & Dance – January

We’re D.E.A.D.ly!!

(Drop Everything And Dance)

As part of the Active Flag initiative for #feelgoodfridays, every classroom took part in Drop Everything And Dance in January. Music was played over the school intercom for all the pupils and staff to enjoy, taking a well deserved break from their hard work for a few minutes of freestyle dancing to ‘Can’t Stop the Feeling’.

SANTA-DASH – December

Our Santa Dash took place on Friday December 17th, as part of the Active Flag initiative for #feelgoodfridays. We based our activity around the strand Outdoor and Adventure Activities, where the pupils took part in an Outdoor Challenge and worked in teams to achieve their goal.

The sight of all the ‘Santas’ dashing around the yard in search of clues while listening to Christmas songs was fabulously festive and great enjoyment was had by all. Well done to all the children for taking part so enthusiastically.

Thank you to all the families who took the time to fill in our Active Flag Survey for parents. The pupils also took part in a survey in school. All results are greatly appreciated and will help us to continue to develop and improve our PE programme and sporting activities in KNS.

WALK a ‘K’ a DAY – November

The pupils and staff of Killavullen NS took part in the Active Break Everyday Challenge from November 8th to December 3rd 2021. We called it ‘Walk a K a Day’ as everyone strived to walk a kilometre around the school each day for the four weeks.

HALLOWEEN DRESS-UP AND DANCE – October

We officially launched the drive for our 2nd Active Flag with our Halloween Dress up and Dance on Oct 22nd. Well done to all who dressed up and got into the ‘spirit’ of things, the effort made by all was fantastic. The excitement, dancing and costumes were a sight to behold, as witches, monsters, ghosts and ghouls moved to the beat.

WALK ON WEDNESDAYS – September

WOW! What a great start to the renewal of our Active Flag campaign. We were thrilled at the enthusiasm shown for the Walk on Wednesdays, and delighted with the turn out no matter what the weather. Well done to all for taking part!

Our Walk on Wednesdays ran from September to the end of October, with teachers donning their hi-vis vests and walking to school with the pupils from three drop-off points around the village. As the year continues, we hope to see pupils choosing to keep active and adding to their daily steps on their morning commute.
